Brotherhood

Temple Tikvah Brotherhood is a fraternal organization whose goals are camaraderie, fostering a sense of community, and supporting the youth of Temple Tikvah.  Brotherhood thinks of itself as the “Cool Uncles.” Your parents say what you want isn’t in the budget.  You’ve spent all of your own money on study materials and donations to charity.  In rides Uncle Shecky on his white steed (in this case, probably a late model midlife crisis Corvette). Bingo! (nearly) Instant subsidies for class trips, youth group events, and summer camp.

To nourish our kinderlech Brotherhood dons aprons to provide seasonal luncheons--latkes for Chanukah and matzoh brei for Passover.  To reduce car insurance premiums, Brotherhood hosts an annual Defensive Driving Class, which is open to the community.

Brotherhood also provides Chanukah and Passover package delivery to the less fortunate.  The packages are assembled through the Bergmann-Hurwitz Fund
and Brotherhood volunteers pitch in to deliver prior to each holiday.

On the last Sunday of Religious School, Brotherhood holds a Field Day where the men of Brotherhood take part in a sacred ritual of male bonding – the charring of
animal and plant matter (Hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers) for a barbeque lunch. The youth show their appreciation at the annual Youth Group vs. Brotherhood Softball Game wherein the hard-charging youth of Temple Tikvah engage in a battle for bragging rights with the soft-creaking Brotherhood.

Brotherhood sponsors social events like couples nights, dinners, movies and outings to sporting venues as well as tennis nights, bowling brunches, and a fall pancake breakfast for the Congregation and prospective members.

The central zircon in the crown that is the panoply of Brotherhood events is Man of the Year, held every spring to support Brotherhood’s Youth Activity and scholarship program funding.  There is a festive dinner, a ‘This is Your Life’ video presentation, and roast for the honoree followed by an auction of goods and services donated by Temple members and local merchants.
